492 children born to Russian mothers in Santa Catarina between 2020 and July 2026, according to the state Health Department. That figure is why travel logistics, not just the immigration mechanism, has become a recurring question among Russian families. The path to citizenship at birth is already covered in another article on this site. Here the focus is different: how long to plan a stay, where to stay, and what to arrange before flying in.
How much time to plan for
According to reporting on the Russian community on the island, expectant mothers typically arrive about a month before the due date, and documented cases exist of women arriving at 36 weeks of pregnancy. That window covers the final prenatal checkups and a possible early birth.
After birth, two sequential procedures set the clock. Civil registration of the baby carries a legal deadline of 15 days, extended to 60 days when the mother is the one filing it. Once the birth certificate is issued, the registry office generates the baby's CPF (tax ID) in the same visit, with no separate step. That has been the rule nationwide since Provimento 63 of the Corregedoria Nacional de Justiça made it mandatory starting January 1, 2018.
The passport comes next and requires two in-person visits to the Polícia Federal: one for the photo and fingerprints, another to collect the document. The official issuance window is 6 to 10 business days from the appointment. Adding registration and passport in sequence, most families finish the paperwork between three and five weeks after the birth, even without delays.
Where to stay: near the maternity hospital or near the community
The three maternity hospitals most used by the Russian community all sit in the Centro district. They are Maternidade Carmela Dutra (public, Rua Irmã Benwarda 208), Hospital Baía Sul (private, Rua Menino Deus 63), and Imperial Hospital de Caridade (private, Rua Menino Deus 376). The last, founded in 1789, is Santa Catarina's oldest hospital.
The Russian community itself clusters in the north of the island — Jurerê, Canasvieiras, and Ingleses — and in the south, around Campeche, according to recent press reporting. Jurerê sits about 25 km from Centro, a 30-to-40-minute drive depending on traffic; Campeche is closer, at 13-15 km and 20-25 minutes.
That distance matters twice: for the weekly prenatal checkups of the final month, and for a birth that can start without warning. Staying in Centro, Agronômica, or Beira-Mar Norte cuts that trip to minutes. Staying in the north of the island puts the Russian community's daily life ahead of proximity to the maternity hospital, a trade-off worth mapping out before renting, not after.
What temporary housing costs
Rent rose 9% over twelve months in Florianópolis and averaged R$ 54.32 per m² in November 2025, according to the FipeZAP index. A 65 m² apartment, the typical size for a couple with a newborn, runs R$ 2,480 to R$ 3,835 a month depending on the neighborhood.
By neighborhood, Centro averages R$ 58.30 per m², Agronômica R$ 54.90 per m², and Ingleses R$ 44.50 per m², the most affordable of the three neighborhoods with a meaningful Russian presence. For a multi-week stay, a furnished monthly lease negotiated directly with a real estate agency usually beats stacking short-term nightly rates.
Short-term platforms such as Airbnb, Booking, and Vrbo carried 36,407 active listings in Florianópolis in June 2026. Reference nightly rates run from R$ 150-250 in Centro to R$ 350-700 in Jurerê, the neighborhood with the heaviest Russian concentration. Between December and March those rates roughly double or triple. For a stay of six to eight weeks, a monthly lease beats booking nights one at a time.
What to arrange before traveling
- Confirm with the chosen maternity hospital or clinic that it accepts international patients, and what documents it requires at admission besides a passport.
- Book the Polícia Federal appointment for the baby's passport as soon as the birth certificate is ready: slots in large cities fill up weeks in advance.
- Pick the housing neighborhood based on distance to the maternity hospital, not lifestyle alone: that trip repeats several times a week in the final month of pregnancy.
- Budget the birth separately from rent. One reported case of hospital and physician fees came to about R$ 14,500; another, at a private clinic with minimal intervention, closed at R$ 10,500.
- Weigh whether a relocation agency is worth it: one reported package totaled R$ 21,000 for a doula, sworn translator, lawyer, and prenatal-and-birth accompaniment, not including rent.
Entry is not the problem, the stay is
The bilateral visa-exemption agreement between Brazil and Russia, in force since 2010, allows entry and a stay of up to 90 days per 180 with no visa process, and pregnancy does not change that. The logistical challenge is not crossing the border. It is sustaining several weeks of housing, medical checkups, and paperwork in a city where the chosen neighborhood can add or cut hours of travel every week.
